Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You do not need a GP referral to arrange an appointment at IIS Health. Patients can contact us directly to book a consultation with a specialist hand and wrist clinician.
Many patients choose to self-refer for problems such as wrist pain, hand numbness, trigger finger, arthritis, sports injuries or recent trauma. Following your assessment, we can arrange any necessary imaging, including X-ray or ultrasound, and discuss both non-surgical and surgical treatment options where appropriate.
If you are using private medical insurance, some insurers may still request a GP referral before authorising treatment, so it is worth checking your policy in advance.
Will I see a consultant specialist?
Yes. Patients at IIS Health are assessed by clinicians who specialise Yes. Patients at iiS Health are assessed by clinicians who specialise exclusively in hand and wrist conditions. Depending on your problem, this may include a consultant hand surgeon or a specialist hand therapist with expertise in upper limb conditions.
Our service is designed to ensure patients are directed to the most appropriate specialist from the outset, helping to avoid unnecessary delays and ensuring treatment is planned correctly from the beginning.
Whether your condition requires advice, imaging, therapy, injections or surgery, your care will be guided by a team focused specifically on hand and wrist problems.
Can I have an X-ray or ultrasound on the same day?
Yes. iiS Health provides on-site imaging facilities including X-ray and ultrasound, allowing many patients to be assessed, investigated and diagnosed during the same visit.
This helps reduce delays and allows treatment planning to begin more quickly, particularly for conditions such as fractures, tendon injuries, arthritis, nerve compression and soft tissue problems.
If additional investigations are required, your clinician will discuss these with you and arrange the most appropriate next step.
Do you offer non-surgical treatment?
Yes. Many hand and wrist conditions can be managed successfully without surgery. Treatment may include splinting, hand therapy, activity modification, injections or guided rehabilitation depending on your diagnosis and symptoms.
Our approach is focused on providing the most appropriate treatment for each individual patient rather than recommending surgery unnecessarily.
If surgery is required, this will only be recommended after a full assessment and discussion of the available options, expected outcomes and recovery process.
What if I do not know what condition I have?
That is very common. Many patients attend iiS Health with symptoms such as pain, numbness, stiffness, weakness or swelling without knowing the exact cause.
The Conditions page has been designed to help patients explore common hand and wrist problems based on symptoms rather than requiring a diagnosis beforehand.
During your consultation, a specialist will assess your symptoms, examine your hand or wrist and arrange any necessary investigations to help identify the underlying condition and discuss the most appropriate treatment options.
Do you treat recent hand or wrist injuries?
Yes. iiS Health offers rapid specialist assessment for recent hand and wrist injuries through the iiS Injury service.
This service is designed for patients who may have sustained a fracture, sprain, tendon injury, dislocation or laceration and want prompt specialist assessment without long delays in urgent care or emergency departments.
The iiS Injury package includes consultation, examination, X-ray imaging where required and immediate first-line treatment such as splinting or wound care if appropriate.
How quickly can I be seen?
iiS Health aims to offer rapid access appointments for both routine and urgent hand and wrist problems. In many cases, patients can be accommodated on the same day or the following day, depending on the nature of the condition and the availability of the most appropriate specialist.
Patients with recent injuries may be suitable for urgent assessment through the iiS Injury service, while routine consultations are arranged as quickly as possible based on clinical requirements and consultant availability.
Weekend appointments may also be available in certain circumstances, although requests received later in the week may occasionally be scheduled within the following 48 hours.
